Project: Decoupage Art Dresser & Mirror
Decoupage Art Dresser & Mirror
Finish: Charcoal Chalk-Style Paint | Technique: Decoupage sheets + hand-painted detail | Pieces: Large dresser with mirror | Source: Thrift / Estate Sale
The Vision
This piece started as a solid, ornate dresser with beautiful carved bead trim and oval panel details — the kind of furniture that deserves to be a statement, not just storage. The goal: transform it into a dramatic, one-of-a-kind art piece that stops people in their tracks.
The Process
The entire dresser and mirror frame were painted in a deep charcoal chalk-style paint, creating a moody, gallery-worthy base. The gold bead trim was dry-brushed with metallic gold paint to make the carved detail pop against the dark finish.
Decoupage sheets featuring a whimsical Victorian flamingo figure and botanical floral artwork were carefully applied to the drawer fronts and oval panels, then sealed. Additional chalk-style paint was used to blend and shadow around the artwork, integrating it seamlessly into the piece rather than looking like a simple paper application.
Pro Tip: When applying decoupage sheets to furniture, work from the center outward to avoid air bubbles. Use chalk-style paint to feather and blend the edges of the sheet into the surrounding painted surface for a truly integrated, painted-on look.
